Hurricane Eta Relief Pt. 2
This morning’s delivery was all about food. We first delivered 12 bags to families currently staying in two small shelters (different shelters from the one we visited with the care packages).
Thanks to our connections in the community, we were able to identify other families that had their houses destroyed or damaged, but declined to stay in the shelter. A local woman working for COPECO (government disaster relief organization) took us to meet seven families in Sector I, an area of Los Pinos I had never before entered. We had to walk the heavy bags pretty far in, and all along the street were places where the ground had given way and slid down, leaving houses and huge rocks super unstable, a continued threat considering it is still raining every day! Some houses had completely collapsed, while others had walls knocked down by the landslides.
We then went to meet with some of Edmy’s contacts in Sector C. This area also suffered great damage - houses that have become unlivable because the retaining wall and dirt beneath them were washed away, including a local pastor’s home. There’s even an area where the road is beginning to give way and threatens to fall on the woman’s home below. Everyone in the area was working to literally dig their home out of the mud. We gave away food bags to eight different families in this area.
We have two more bags that will be delivered to families later on this week.
